Recreational fishing and boating are under threat in the Gulf of Mexico…Act Now!

ACT NOW! Recreational fishing and boating are under threat in the Gulf of Mexico! Environmental advocacy groups have petitioned Noaa Fisheries to establish a year-round 11 mph speed limit for all boats traveling from Pensacola, Florida, to south of Tampa to protect a newly discovered species of whale. The petitioners seek to protect the Rice’s whale from vessel strikes and noise pollution, and while the current petition is limited to vessels primarily off Florida and Alabama, it is likely the entire Gulf of Mexico could eventually be declared habitat for Rice’s whales.

NOAA Fisheries is accepting public input on the petition through July 6, 2023.
